Description

From Hip Hop to graffiti, from experimental film to modern dance, contemporary artists continue to push the boundaries of what Muslim or “Islamic” art looks like. At these new frontiers, where you don't have to be Muslim to create Muslim culture, are we seeing the emergence of an Islamic Avant-Garde - creative activity that causes a genuine “shock of the new”? Abdul-Rehman Malik explores the meaning and impact of an “Islamic Avant-Garde” and how it is changing the way “Muslim-ness,” is being expressed.

ABDUL-REHMAN MALIK is an award winning journalist, program designer and cultural organizer working at the intersection of faith, culture and social justice. He will be in-residence at Shangri La Museum of Islamic Art, Culture & Design from June 19-28, 2018.

This program is part of the “What is Muslim Culture?” series developed by Shangri La Museum of Islamic Art, Culture & Design and Abdul-Rehman Malik.
